Program Description

The City will host two community engagement workshops to update residents on the Vic Trace Reservoir Replacement Project. Located in the Alta Mesa neighborhood, this storage reservoir is a vital component of the City's water distribution system, serving nearly 60,000 people or 70% of Santa Barbara. This multi-year Project will build a new reservoir facility with the same capacity to meet future water storage needs for resiliency and reliability. The Project is currently in design and construction is expected to begin in 2028.  Spanish interpretation will be available at both meetings.

The Project includes the following improvements:

  • The 70-year-old reservoir will be replaced to meet current seismic standards, helping ensure water is available during future earthquake events or other emergencies.
  • The new split-tank design (two reservoirs) will allow the City to keep one tank fully operational during planned and unplanned repairs, minimizing water service disruptions and enhancing the City’s water system resiliency.
  • Once the Project is complete, the site will have enhanced security for water supply safety and protection, new fire and drought-resistant landscaping, as well as improved site drainage and stormwater capture.
